Defence at Sorbonne University
First, the student and his/her supervisor submit (by e-mail to ed3c@sorbonne-universite.fr) a proposal for the composition of the thesis jury to the Director of the Doctoral School for validation. This proposal must be accompanied by a list of publications and a copy of the contract of employment or the certificate of funding up to the date of the defence.

Composition of the defence jury:
- The jury consists of 4 to 8 members
- At least half of its members are french or foreign personalities from outside the doctoral school, the university to which the student's laboratory is affiliated and Sorbonne University, chosen for their scientific expertise.
- It must necessarily include two rapporteurs who are not associated with ED3C, the university to which the student's laboratory is affiliated and Sorbonne University. They must not have signed any publications with the PhD student and are accredited to supervise research (PU, DR, CR-HDR, MCU-HDR, PH-HDR) or equivalent for foreign rapporteur (in this later case, a brief CV of the rapporteur must be attached to the jury proposal for validation by the ED3C Director).
- members of the Thesis Monitoring Commitee (CSI) may serve on the Jury as examiners, but may not be Rapporteurs.
- at least half of the jury must be professors or equivalent (research directors).
- the composition of the jury must allow for a balanced representation of women and men.

On the day of the defence, the members of the jury appoint a president. The president must be a professor or equivalent (the supervisor cannot be president of a jury).
FAQ :
- What about emeritus or retired professors and researchers?
Emeritus or retired professors can be part of the Jury and, on the basis of their accreditation to supervise research, be rapporteurs, but they are no longer part of the professors and equivalent. Consequently, they cannot preside the Jury and count for the minimum number of professors or equivalent required in the jury.
- Does a member of Sorbonne University has to be on the Jury?
Sorbonne University does not require that one of the Jury members with voting rights be a lecturer or a researcher of Sorbonne University
- What titles and foreign diplomas are considered equivalent to a university professorship?
People with the titles listed in the document downloadable here (from the equivalence grid provided on Galaxie) are considered equivalent to university professors and, a fortiori, benefit from HDR equivalence.
