Application
Irrespective of the administrative registration institution, the procedures for recruitment and application to the ED3C are the same for all PhD students.
Prerequisites
- have a Master's degree or equivalent
- have a PhD director holding an HDR (habilitation to supervise research) and attached to the ED3C (maximum of 3 PhD students per director)
- be funded for the 3-year PhD programme
The doctoral school takes into account the skills of the candidate, the feasibility of the research project, the number of PhD students in the team and the funding obtained. Applications are considered in the same way regardless of the original master's degree and regardless of the registration institution.
Application procedure
Candidates who have obtained a PhD funding without going through the Doctoral Contract Allocation Process must obtain the pedagogical agreement of the doctoral school in order to proceed with the administrative registration at the university.
All application documents, to be sent to ed3C@sorbonne-universite.fr, must contain :
- the fiche de candidature signed by the PhD director (in pdf format)
- a CV
- proof of funding for the 3 years of doctoral studies
- a copy of the Master's degree transcipt and diploma or certificate of successful completion (the diploma supplement is accepted for candidates holding a European diploma)
Some precisions
The Master's degree is the required title to access to doctoral studies in France. All candidates must provide a copy of the diploma.
f you do not have a copy of your diploma, an official certificate of achievement is requested -dated, signed and stamped - issued by the person in charge of the Master or the person in charge of the mention of the Master.
For foreign diplomas outside the EU, an exemption must be granted by the director of the doctoral school. The diploma must be translated into French by an official certified translator.
If your application is accepted by the doctoral school, you must provide an employment contract during your administrative registration.
Failing this, a stamped employment certificate on headed paper issued by the human resources department in charge of the contract (CNRS, INSERM, private companies, etc.) indicating the start and end dates of the contract, as well as the monthly amount of net remuneration received, will be accepted. The certificate must specify the nature of the funding and the issuer, as well as the type of contract to be drawn up (CDD, doctoral contract, ...).
Unstamped employment certificates, employment certificates not indicating the start and end dates of the contract, employment certificates signed only by the thesis director, laboratory director, etc. will not be accepted.
PhD involving work in two separate laboratories (possibly two separate teams) with different areas of expertise (e.g. neuroscience and computer science, neuroscience and mathematics, neuroscience and physics, etc.) may require joint direction. The request for co-direction must be approved by the doctoral school director at the time of application. Co-direction within the same team is not possible. If a member of the team other than the PhD director (with or without an HDR) will play an active role in supervising the thesis, he or she may be listed as a co-supervisor at the time of administrative registration. The co-supervisor is not a co-director.
In the application form, specify the name of the co-director, his status, his laboratory, his team, his university or establishment of attachment. The co-directors must be authorized to direct research (HDR). For foreign co-directors, a CV will be requested.
If the person approached does not hold an HDR, he or she may appear at the time of administrative registration as a co-supervisor. The co-supervisor is not a co-director.
The international cotutella agreement allows a student to carry out his research work under the responsibility of two thesis directors: one in France and the other one in a foreign country. The two co-directors exercise their functions jointly and the student is required to work alternately in the two establishments. The thesis gives rise to a single defense (in one of the two countries), in one of the two national languages, and leads to the award of two diplomas or a joint diploma.
The preparation of a international cotutella thesis requires the establishment of an agreement between the French university and the foreign university hosting the doctoral student.
Depending on the university where the PhD student is registered, the procedures for setting up an international cotutella agreement change:
